Like Thomas Jefferson's Virginia mansion from which it takes its name, Monticello, Illinois, is a place with an exceptional architectural heritage. And one Monticello estate has been much more than an elegant private home. It is the cornerstone of one of the most important chapters in this community's history, and a key to our future.
John Kirby was an Irish immigrant and wealthy livestock farmer. He and his wife, Mary, willed their estate in 1939 to establish what is now John and Mary E. Kirby Hospital. Although the mansion that was the original hospital is gone, the estate's park-like grounds today comprise the site of a fully accredited and licensed community hospital dedicated to serving the people of Piatt County and surrounding areas.
